Setting: Java Lava Cafe

Mari might kill the next person who looked at her the wrong way. Okay, well maybe killing was an exaggeration...likely she would give them a very good tongue-lashing. She was having a crappy day and it wasn't even close to lunch time yet. It was mostly because of stupid stupid Gianna. She was supposed to be working this shift. She was the one who had told her mother there was an emergency (which Mari didn't believe for one second) and she couldn't work. That left her mother scrambling to cover the cafe during one of their busy times and Mari had been in class. On top of all that, Mari had been late to class because their morning practice had run too long. It was just...a shitty day.

Now instead of working on her homework and studying for her finance test that was coming up she was working at the cafe. She was working when she shouldn't be and there was no guarantee she'd get paid for this shift either. It was hard when you were the boss's daughter. She wasn't necessarily her mother's highest priority when it came to handing out her checks or overtime. Half the time she had to work under the table anyway. Mari was scrubbing at the counter when the bell dinged signaling someone coming into the empty cafe. She looked up only to offer the man a strained smile and went back to cleaning. She didn't feel like being nice right now.

She turned around to clean the espresso machine and frowned when she saw the leak coming from the bottom. Fuck. She thought they had fixed that. Mari walked over, rag in hand, to investigate. She bent her head below the leak to see. Crap. She hoped this would still work or they'd be screwed. She sighed and went to stand up and promptly smacked the back of her head on the bottom of the machine hard enough to make her hiss. "Fuck!" She cursed as she jumped up quickly and threw her hand to the back of her head to feel the bump that was forming. She turned to grab the rag she had deposited and her arm swung out enough to knock all the cups that were sitting on the counter over and spilling onto the floor. "Are you fucking kidding me?!" She exclaimed swiveling to kicking the counter in frustration.

Then the sinks burst. Well, they didn't burst but...the water of the sinks used to clean and make drinks suddenly turned on and began to shoot out in all directions drenching the counter and floor and...the man behind the counter. Every bit of anger, frustration, pain, and not to mention color in her cheeks drained out of Mari in a moment. "Shit! Oh my god..." She muttered and ran over as if it would turn the sinks off, but as often happened when this happened the minute the anger left her the water slowed to a normal stream and then by the time she made it over, her heart practically beating out of her chest, it was slowing to a small drip.

"Oh my god! I'm so sorry. That sink it's been..." Mari scrambled for the towels to clean up the mess while her mind scrambled for a way to explain the fact that the sink had just gone beserk. An explanation that didn't include 'sorry I lost my temper and my dad's Poseidon so water likes to respond to my emotion and it was like protecting me or something. Sorry dude.'. Something that didn't make her sound so totally insane. "Acting up." She finished lamely, not even looking the man in the eyes. She was still trying to busy herself cleaning so she wouldn't have to see his reaction.

Once she knew she could no longer really explain not looking up at him, she looked up at him nervously. "I am so sorry." She said again, holding out a towel for him. "Anything you want. On the house, obviously." As soon as she handed him the towel Mari quickly ducked her head and tried to clean up some of the water on the cash register.

How the hell was she going to explain this away??

Bennett Sheridan was not Mari's ideal partner. Granted, if Mari had had her way she would not have to work with a partner or groups at any point in time. She was not someone who worked well with others and, yes, she understood that in order to be successful in business you needed to know how to collaborate and work well in groups. However, she didn't see why it had to apply to her because she was getting a business degree to help with her mother's cafe, so she could take it over successfully when her mother was ready to retire. She wasn't going to be working with boards or a multitude of colleagues. It would mostly just be her. So, why did she have to learn to freaking work better with people?

Despite all these feelings towards group and partnered projects...Mari still had to do them. That was how she ended up with Bennett Sheridan as a partner. Not her first choice, but well at least she knew he pulled his weight. He was annoying, but he got the job done. So, she had agreed to work with Bennett again for this project in which they had to study a business theory and then present on it. They had chosen disruptive innovation. They had decided to research separately before they came together and talked about the details of their presentation. So that is what found Mari in the library in a study room this evening after dinner. She didn't particularly want to be here, but it had seemed like the best option.

Mari crossed her legs and looked out the glass windows for her partner. He was late. She twirled her still wet red hair and looked down at her notes. She leaned down to grab her phone from her purse, wondering if she should text him. He was only five minutes late. She should not be getting impatient, Mari knew that. She should just give it another few minutes before she texted him and asked politely if he forgot. Mari just had very little patience on her best day, let alone when she didn't actually want to be here about to work on this school project. She was tired. Her body felt like lead and she just wanted to go home. Her eyes flicked over to the doors once more. The red-head let out a sigh and straightened as Bennett finally emerged. "You're late, Sheridan."

Daddy Poseidon

This is really a super duper open ad. I just really want Mari’s father to come along and play with. Basically the story is that Mari’s mother, Amara Zacharellis, met Poseidon when she was a teenager. He presented himself as a surfer to her and the only way she has described him as been as having the eyes of the ocean. Whether or not he actually cared about Amara is completely up to you. Amara was pretty damn smitten with him (she never married) and never blamed him for leaving her and his daughter. She understood and never harbored any hate for him.

Now Mari is different story. Mari was never told about her father until she was eighteen and suddenly developing powers to control small bits of water and it was responding to her. Now as a child she had not been her father’s biggest fan, but when she found out who he really was…she really turned on him. How the hell could a freaking GOD leave them to struggle the way they did? Why did he not at least set her mother up with some kind of safety net?

Whether or not Poseidon knows about her is up to you, I imagine he might, but maybe he doesn’t! One way or another, however, they meet and maybe Poseidon is trying to protect her from the god-hunters that have suddenly made themselves known. She’s pretty young and she’s still learning to control the powers she has so maybe he’s concerned she will cause a scene and get noticed and whatever tiny fatherly instincts he has as a God makes him want to help her. It would be a bumpy long, somewhat angsty, and funny road the two of them would go on. Plus there is all the fun things a God could get into in Maui.

It’d be so much fun, so please take him!

Marina Zacherellis is a third generation Hawaiian. Her grandparents moved here shortly after their wedding. It was their second wedding each and they both desired a fresh start. They moved here to get a fresh start. They promptly started a small café in their community. Since they were both over 40 years old they didn’t expect to have any children…but only a year into their marriage came along their daughter Amara.

Amara grew up in Hawaii learning to swim and surf came as second nature. They were never surprised when their daughter came back smelling of salt water and grinning. They were surprised, however, when at eighteen Amara came back pregnant. They pressed for details on the father, but Amara was very close-lipped only saying it was a surfer with eyes as deep as the ocean itself. As nice as that was, it didn’t pay for the child that came along nine months later: Marina Zacharellis.

Despite being a surprise and her mother having no education, Marina was very loved. She grew up in the small café and coffee shop that her grandparents ran and then eventually her mother as they retired. She asked about her father when she was old enough to understand that she didn’t have one and other children did. Her mother told her the same thing she told her parents, but promised when she was old enough she would tell her all about them.

Mari decided quickly that if her father wasn’t there he wasn’t worth knowing anyway. She took to the water even more than her mother had. By the time she was seven Mari was on a local swim team and spending her free time surfing. As she grew older it became very clear that Mari was miles ahead of many of the swimmers on her team. She started winning races left and right. Mari threw herself into it seeing it as her way out. It was her way to college. Her mother couldn’t afford college on her own. Their little shop barely made ends meet every single month…let alone afford tuition.

She was getting multiple offers from colleges when she was seventeen and preparing to apply to colleges. It was then, however, that her grandfather died of a heart attack. Within a year…her grandmother had gone as well. It threw off their entire family dynamic. It was just her and her mother now. They had no one else. Amara had never married. It was just them and their business.

In all this mess, Mari turned eighteen. She was in the middle of a particularly hard work-out (by herself, luckily) and she smacked her head against the wall from not paying attention. She had risen and cursed and suddenly the weight of the past months had come washing over her and she was bawling from the pain of it all. It was then that very suddenly the pool water turned dark and the water began to move and wane, like an ocean might. It was forming full out waves and Mari had scrambled out faster than anything when she realized what was going on.

She ran home shaking, not even bothering to have changed out of her suit, and cried the entire tale to her mother. To her shock, her mother didn’t seem surprised…instead she smiled. It came out then, the truth. That her father was indeed a surfer with eyes like the ocean because…he was the ocean. He was Poseidon. Mari thought she was insane. She had screamed at her. She had told her she was crazy, but as the days wore on water began reacting to Mari the way it had in the pool and she knew her mother wasn’t lying.

Given all this had happened, Mari knew she couldn’t leave for college like she had been planning. She couldn’t exactly go to Vermont or California or any of the other schools that had offered her scholarships knowing all this. What if something happened and she couldn’t control herself? Anyway, who would take care of her mother? She had no one else.

So despite her mother’s protests, Mari enrolled in Maui University. It would keep her near the ocean, which she rather begrudgingly now felt a very strong pull to, and allowed her to help out at the café and keep an eye on her mother. After all, no one else was going to do it.

friends Mari is a little rough around the edges. She’s competitive. She’s smart as a whip and with a tongue to go along with it. She’s got very little patience for people and their petty problems. She knows what it’s like to really go week-to-week paycheck to paycheck and she knows real loss. So, when friends get upset over a boy not liking them…she tells them to suck it up and get over yourself. That being said…she is a good friend once you are there. She may not be super cuddly, but she will always be there for you. No matter what.

foes Yeah so as I said Mari’s a bit rough around the edges. So…this is going to be people on her swim team at school who have tried to beat her and she’s been relentless in getting to where she is. It will be people who have a problem with the barbs of her personality. Her foe list may be longer than her friend list.

lovers From seventeen to about nineteen Mari was a bit wrapped up in the fact that she lost both her grandparents (her second parents) and suddenly got powers from a father she has never known to be dating people. Now she’s a bit more open in this area, but she’s not an easy person to get to know. Remember, in her mind men have never been upstanding in her life...so good luck if you like her. You’ve got quite a bit of work in front of you, but I’d love to see her open up to someone.
